Military Heros - Sgt. Alvin York tried to stay out of World War I as a conscientious objector. When his request was denied, he followed orders and went to war where he almost single-handedly captured 132 German soldiers. He then led these prisoners through the German lines and marched them along with his own comrades.
Overall, France gets a pretty bad reputation when it comes to military prowess. Some of the jokes are actually true - when France fell to the Nazi regime during World War II, General Charles de Gaulle fought to rally soldiers ready and willing to drive out the Führer's army... not exactly the kind of bravery you write home about.

Navy SEAL Michael Thornton, a native of Greenville, saved the life of his superior officer, Lt. Thomas R. Norris when the Vietnam operation went wrong. Outnumbered, he carried Norris to escape through the water under heavy enemy fire, and even gave Norris his own life jacket.
Thornton received numerous awards for his service, including the Medal of Honor. Born in Sentinel Butte, Staff Sgt. Jack J. Pendleton was part of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, which arrived in Normandy, Europe on June 11, 1944. By October he had arrived in Bardenberg, Germany.
During the battle there, Pendleton led his unit toward an enemy position while avoiding heavy enemy fire. Although suffering from a serious leg wound, Pendleton crawled forward towards the enemy post and drew the fire on himself, allowing others to overrun the German position.
He was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The military named the ship in his honor. Born in the small town of Knox City, Laverne Parrish served as a medical assistant in the Army in the Philippines in 1945. During the battle, he pulled five wounded men to safety and treated 12 more while suffering heavy
enemy fire. In total, he treated 37 men during the battle. He continued to help the wounded until he was killed by a grenade launcher. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions. When his unarmed helicopter flew into enemy territory in Vietnam in 1967, Duane D. Hackney of Flint, a paramedic, volunteered to go into the jungle to find a downed soldier.

As they loaded the rescued man into the helicopter, Hackney gave the man his own parachute. Just as Hackney found the other, enemies fired at the helicopter and Hackney was blown through the door. He managed to open a replacement chute and survived to receive the Air Force Cross.
John Lincoln Clem changed his middle name from Joseph to Lincoln sometime before he attempted to enlist in the Union Army when the Civil War broke out when he was 9 years old. After being rejected by another unit, he arrived with the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry who cut off the musket he later used to kill a Confederate officer who demanded his surrender.

Anthony Wayne (1745-1796) - General Anthony Wayne was an American soldier, officer, politician and one of the founding fathers of the United States. When the American Revolution began, he took up a military career, where his military exploits and fiery personality earned him a promotion to brigadier general and the nickname "Mad Anthony".
William B. Travis (1809-1836) – A lawyer who settled in Texas from Alabama, Travis resented Mexican rule and fought in the Texas Revolution. He fought alongside James Bowie and Davy Crockett and died at the Battle of the Alamo.
While manning a machine gun near Varennes, France, during World War I, Capt. Donald Cole's tank took a direct hit from a high-explosive shell. As gas from the explosion filled the inside of the tank, Call climbed out and took cover nearby.
Realizing that the officer who was in the tank with him was not following him, he got back into the tank, rescued the officer and carried him a mile to safety to avoid sniper fire. The New York resident received the honorary degree.
Dennis Bell was a soldier from Buffalo—a member of the all-African American 10th Cavalry Regiment. During the Spanish-American War, Bell went on a rescue mission to help wounded colleagues in Tayabacoa, Cuba. Although some believed the mission impossible, Bell and his comrades successfully rescued the injured men.

President Joe Biden on Friday will present the Medal of Honor to a Vietnam War Black Army Special Forces hero who waited nearly 60 years to receive the nation's highest award for bravery after the military said they lost his papers — twice.
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) - A pioneer, lawyer and the 16th President of the United States, he led this country through the most devastating experience in its national history - the Civil War. He was killed on April 14, 1865 and died the next day.
Many historians consider him to be the greatest American president. In 2008, Capt. Joseph Lolino was serving in the army in Afghanistan as a medic when his convoy caught fire. He drove to the firing line and stopped there to treat four wounded soldiers.
Despite being hit by shrapnel himself, Lolino continued to treat the wounds of others and evacuate the wounded. For his actions, the Hoffman Estates native received the Distinguished Service Cross. "He said he was run over by the Viet Cong."

From 1891 to 1932, Margaret Norvell, raised in New Orleans, saved many lives as a keeper in the US Lighthouse Service, which later merged with the US Coast Guard. When a seaplane crashed on Lake Pontchartrain in 1926 in the middle of a storm, she rowed a boat through the storm for two hours to reach and retrieve the survivor.
The Coast Guard named a cutter in her honor in 2013. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) – clergyman, activist and prominent leader of the African-American civil rights movement; where he raised public awareness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in American history.
He was killed in 1968. He collected intelligence in Auschwitz and sent it to the Polish underground army for two years, enduring brutal conditions and near starvation to detail Nazi executions and interrogation methods. When the Allies continued to delay any aid (some even accused him of exaggerating his reports, according to NPR), he broke out of the camp and fled.
Pilecki continued to collect intelligence throughout the war, and did not let up afterwards, even though he was now against a different government - the Soviet regime in Poland. In 1967, Stephen Wayne of Fairmount was a first lieutenant who teamed up with Major Robert Pard to fly a mission near Hanoi, Vietnam.
The two eventually made history with "Pardo's Push," when another aircraft was critically hit by enemy fire. Although their aircraft was also damaged, Wayne and Pardo were able to hook their aircraft to the other and bring both aircraft to safety, where all four pilots were able to eject.
Wayne received a Silver Star for his actions. Born near Medicine Park, Charles Chibiti was not allowed to speak his native Comanche language at school. As an Army corporal during World War II, the same language—and that of other tribes—allowed Chibiti and other Native American code talkers to transmit life-saving information during the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts.

Chibiti received five battle stars from his tribe in the campaign, as well as a cavalry officer's sabre. In 1999, the Pentagon Hall of Heroes awarded him the Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award. Staff Sgt. Joseph Conlon of Manchester fought as part of a special forces unit in Vietnam in 1968. When enemy soldiers attacked a command post, Conlon defended the position and rescued wounded soldiers, even shielding one from enemy fire with his body.
Due to Special Forces regulations, Conlon was not awarded the Silver Star for his actions until 2011. In 1969, Hartford Airman 1st Class John Levitow served as a loadmaster on an AC-47 gunship while firing ammunition and dropping rockets against the Long Binh Post in Vietnam.
Five hours into his mission, a grenade launcher exploded through the plane, hitting him and four others with shrapnel. One of the wounded threw a lighted 27-pound rocket into the plane, dangerously close to explosive ordnance.
Levitov was able to grab him while he was injured and throw him out of the plane with seconds to spare. He is one of only two Airmen to receive the Medal of Honor in Vietnam (the other being Airman 1st Class William Pitsenbarger of Piqua, Ohio).
In 1998, the Air Force named the C-17 Globemaster aircraft after Levitov. John Basilone, who grew up in Raritan, was serving as a sergeant in the Marine Corps during the third month of the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942 when one of his heavy machine guns was badly damaged by enemy fire.
Basilone not only maneuvered the new one into place, but was also able to repair the other, while the battle raged around him. He later obtained additional ammunition for his men by passing through enemy lines.
Basilone received both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. He later died at Iwo Jima. Then there are those who became war heroes only after changing their identity. Consider Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War.
Or Irish-born Jenny Hodgers, who turned into a man named Albert Cashier and fought in the American Civil War.
